27 Weeks

27 Weeks: 5.15.12

How your baby's growing:

This week, your baby weighs almost 2 pounds (like a head of cauliflower) and is about 14 1/2 inches long with her legs extended.

She's sleeping and waking at regular intervals, opening and closing her eyes, and perhaps even sucking her fingers. With more brain tissue developing, your baby's brain is very active now. While her lungs are still immature, they would be capable of functioning — with a lot of medical help — if she were to be born now. Chalk up any tiny rhythmic movements you may be feeling to a case of baby hiccups, which may be common from now on. Each episode usually lasts only a few moments, and they don't bother her, so just relax and enjoy the tickle.

How your life's changing:

The second trimester is drawing to a close, but as your body gears up for the final lap, you may start noticing some new symptoms. Along with an aching back, for example, you may find that your leg muscles cramp up now and then. They're carrying extra weight, after all, and your expanding uterus is putting pressure on the veins that return blood from your legs to your heart as well as on the nerves leading from your trunk to your legs.
Unfortunately, the cramps may get worse as your pregnancy progresses. Leg cramps are more common at night but can also happen during the day. When a cramp strikes, stretching the calf muscle should give you some relief.  Straighten your leg and then gently flex your toes back toward your shin. Walking for a few minutes or massaging your calf sometimes helps, too.

Update:
- I have really noticed a pattern to her sleep and wake schedule.  After I eat breakfast in the morning..about an hour and a half later she starts moving. Also early afternoon (as I type this) and right as I crawl into bed.  Occasionally I notice her kicks in the morning before I get out of bed.

- Heartburn sucks! I have never had it before in my life, and now with my uterus expanding and pushing all of those stomach acids up.. I have been getting sick.  I finally bought my first pack of Tums, which has helped. But I find if I eat too big of a meal or anything to greasy it doesn't sit well.  I have also found that sitting up after I eat (as much as I want to lay down on the couch) also helps.

- I have noticed leg cramps this week as well.  Just yesterday after I got home from work I felt a tight painin my legs that just needed a good rubbing to go away.

- I am gearing up for my baby shower next month. I just received my invitation in the mail last week and I am very excited to go home, see my friends/family and get showered with baby gifts. (And yes..eat some cake too!)

- We got your crib assembled on Wed night 5.9.12 and it is so surreal now. I love walking by your room and seeing it sit there.  Hopefully we are going to get some of the other baby gear out of the box soon and start assembling it as well.  We looked at some dressers this past weekend, and I think we are going to order one this Sunday.

- I'm really not looking forward to my Glucose test next week, even though I know it's necessary.

- 3 Months from today is our due date!
